Question:

What is the difference between the Economy, Academic and Fluted gown?

Answer:

Although the three gowns all have different names and varying prices they are all bachelors gowns.

The Fluted gown (£47.50) is our most traditional gown. This is the type of gown you would expect to see at a university graduation ceremony. It is made of heavy twill weave polyester (375gsm) and features a fluted back. Fluting is the line of repeated folded fabric across the back and shoulders.

The Academic gown (£37.50) is our best selling bachelors gowns. Unlike the fluted gown, the fabric at the back of the gown is gathered across the back and shoulders, it is also made of lighter weight twill weave polyester (300gsm). You can think of it as a simplified version of its fluted counterpart.

The Economy gown (£27.50) is our simplest bachelors gown. You would not expect to see this type of gown at a university graduation ceremony. However, it is an excellent choice for those who require a gown on a small budget. The economy gown has a plain, simply stitched back and it is made of lightweight (180gsm) plain weave polyester.

Question:

How long can I keep my hired items for?

Answer:

Before hiring your garments you will need to complete a Private Hire Agreement. This will be sent to you by email upon request.

The form will require you to specify a latest date of delivery, to ensure you garments arrive on time. You will have 5 days from this date to return your item(s). Before the 5-day period has elapsed the items must have been posted by a tracked form of delivery.

Question:

What items do I need for my graduation?

Answer:

There are three garments that are typically worn at graduation.

The first of these is the graduation gown. The type of gown will depend on whether you are receiving a bachelors, masters or doctorate.

The second is the mortarboard cap. Both bachelors and masters wear this, however, recipients of a doctorate will wear a Tudor bonnet.

The final item is the academic hood. Bachelors, masters and doctoral students but not diploma level wear these. If you are receiving a diploma it is likely you will wear a diploma stole.

Question:

What is the difference between the felt and polyester mortarboard?

Answer:

The design of the two mortarboards is essentially the same. They are both of traditional design.

The felt however, is the more tradition material for UK graduations. The polyester is a slightly more economical alternative.

Question:

Do different universities use different gowns?

Answer:

Yes, different universities use slightly different gowns. Although the variation is very small, most designs are based on the traditional 'Oxford' or 'Cambridge' style.

Mortarboard caps tend to vary less with a 'softskull' felt mortarboard; being the most widely adopted by universities.

The most specific and unique part of the university attire is the Academic Hood, these tend to be designed for the university and will be made in proprietary colours for that institute. For this reason the hood designs are copyright by the official provider.

Question:

What is the difference between a bachelors and masters gown?

Answer:

The main difference between bachelors and masters gown is the shape of the sleeves. Bachelors gowns have 'batwing' sleeves whilst masters gowns have 'Tudor' sleeves, long tube like sleeves that hang down from the elbow.

Question:

Can I have my gown Embroidered?

Answer:

Yes, we offer embroidery on all items, even our mortarboard caps. Embroidery is charged by the number of stitches. Printing is also available.

Question:

What is the difference between a simple and full shaped hood?

Answer:

The two most common types of hood are the simple-shaped and full-shaped.

The simple-shaped hood has a cowl and liripipe, whilst a full-shaped hood also has a cape, which sits against the back of the wearer.

In summary, it is the addition of the cape (usually square) that indicates that it is a full-shaped hood.

There are other shapes of hood which Graduation Attire are well versed in providing so please contact us for specific requests.

Question:

How should I measure my height?

Answer:

Gowns are sized by height, so you will need to know your height from head to floor.

If you do not know this measurement we advise using a tape measure or other suitable tool.

Question:

How do I measure my head size?

Answer:

The correct way to measure your head size is to take the circumference approximately 1 inch above your eyebrows. If you are not sure what size you need (e.g. you land on the boundary), we would recommend going for the larger size, allowing a more comfortable fit.

Question:

How do I know which size to choose?

Answer:

Gowns are size by height in feet and inches, they are also described in CM for the convenience of international customers. Height should be measured from head to floor and there is no need for chest size when purchasing our open front garments. Our closed front garments fit a range of chest sizes comfortably but you will need to notify us if your chest size is greater than 54 inches.

Our available sizes range from small children’s sizes to large adult sizes (3 foot - 7 foot), so we have gowns to fit everyone.

Each gown comes in a different size categories differing by 3 inches, for example:

5'0 -5'2

5'3 - 5'5

5'6 - 5'8. If you were 5 foot 4 inches you would choose the 5'3 - 5'5 size.

Our mortarboards come in 4 difference sizes: Small, Medium, Large and XL. You will need to know your head circumference before purchase.

Question:

Does my chest size matter?

Answer:

Chest size for our open front garments is not important, but if you have any specific requirements call us on 01234 880956.

For our closed front garments (choir robes and American gowns) all garments fit chest sizes up to 54 inches. Should your chest size exceed this you will need to contact us for a fulfit size.
